Celebrating Langston Hughes

May 22 of this year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Langston Hughes. Charles is involved in a number of events honoring this great African-American poet, playwright and social activist.

Wednesday, February 1: Charles will team up with Antioch College Professor, Dr. Kevin McGruder, to present a lecture/concert in honor of Langston Hughes’ Birthday. The event, which will include singing and the recitation of Hughes’ poetry, will be held in the Foundry Theater at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH.

Saturday, February 25 at 8 p.m., Charles will appear with guitarist Gary Prince at Washington D.C. Corner Store Arts in a commemoration of Hughes that combines song, poetry and story. Corner Store Arts is located in Capitol Hill, at 900 South Carolina Avenue, SE. The closest Metro is Eastern Market. On Sunday, April 2 and Monday, April 3, Charles will return to Ohio to do two performances as a vocal and spoken word artist with the World House Choir and the Central State University Chorus in a tribute to Langston Hughes.

Our Berlin Years, Levine School, Washington, DC
A musical-literary evening of songs and stories portraying the adventures of Charles and his wife Ruth as the African American and Filipina learn their way around Berlin. The program, with piano accompaniment by Betty Bullock, includes German songs, music theater standards, opera arias and traditional spirituals.

Cabaret Night, Levine School, Washington, DC
Charles does a variety program featuring favorite songs from his wide-ranging repertoire.

Evergreens, Levine School, Washington, DC
A cabert performance featuring Charles and Guitarist Eric Ulreich presenting musical treasures from the Great American Songbook.

The Temptation of St. Anthony, cast member and vocal coach. The production, which was directed by Robert Wilson with music and book by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, toured Europe in 2003 and did encore performances in Paris, France, Warsaw, Poland, Melbourne, Australia and New York, NY in 2005.

Charles is available for voice-over narration. Hear an exerpt of Charles reading James Weldon Johnson's The Creation (sound effects by Tom Teasley).
